YA: Divergent Movie

Everyone has been eagerly awaiting the release of “Catching Fire”, the second movie in the Hunger Games series. Another great dystopia book to make it to the big screen is “Divergent” by Veronica Roth. This YA novel tells the story of Tris, a girl born in a society where the citizens are divided into 5 factions, all of which are based on a different virtue. All 16-year-olds take an aptitude test to determine which faction they belong in for the rest of their lives. For Tris the test results are inconclusive, marking her as divergent, which is a dangerous thing to be in this society.

The trailer plays up the romance a little more than necessary and does an okay job at covering the action that was packed into this trilogy’s first installment. This happens to be one of my favorite dystopias right now (the other being “The Maze Runner”). The fast pace of the book makes it a page turner. While the trailer isn’t the most promising, I’m excited to see some of the characters brought to life, most notably Christina. I’m also a little excited to see Tori and Jeanine, who are played by the amazing Maggie Q and Kate Winslet respectively. Read the book before the movie premiers on March 21st!
